Litter, Litter Boxes, and Litter Scoopers: Finding What Works Best for You and Your Cat
When it comes to maintaining a clean and odor-free litter box, the right products can make all the difference. Here’s what I’ve found works best and how you can ensure a happy litter box experience for both you and your cat!
Litter Choices: Combining for the Best Results
I’ve had great success mixing two types of litter: SoPhresh Grass Seed Litter and Sustainably Yours Casava Litter. Together, they create excellent, firm pee clumps that won’t break apart. A good clumping litter is essential to keeping your cat’s box clean and odor-free.
There are, of course, other options to consider:
- Traditional Clumping Clay Litter: Popular for its strong clumping and odor control.
- Tidy Cats Breeze System: Known for separating liquid and solid waste with special pellets and pads.
- SmartCat Box: Utilizes a unique, urine-separating design to keep the box clean and dry.
Why Litter Box Smells Happen
A litter box won’t smell if you can prevent the pee clumps from breaking apart. This is why it’s essential to use a high-quality litter and keep it deep enough—at least 3 to 5 inches. Scoop at least once a day to maintain cleanliness. Cats tend to like their own scent, so you don’t need to scrub or empty the box unless it starts to get gross or smelly. Just top up the litter as needed to keep it at the right depth.
Litter Box Size: Bigger Is Better
The bigger the litter box, the better it is for your cat. They should have plenty of space to turn around and choose their preferred spot. I recommend using larger boxes like these:
Both types are similarly priced, and while the stainless option is slightly smaller, it’s still a great choice. Give your cat the room they need to feel comfortable.
Litter Scooper: Make Cleaning Easy
A sturdy scooper makes the job so much easier. My go-to is this litter scooper, which has a wide surface area and large holes that help speed up the scooping process. It’s durable and easy to hang out of the way, thanks to the hole in the handle. I attach it to the wall using a Command strip hook and put a piece of contact paper behind it to keep the wall clean.
